Christmas light materials for C9 installs

A C9 roofline is built from a short list of materials: socket wire, bulbs, a clip for every socket, plugs to start and finish each run, and a timer to switch it. This store lists each of those parts on its own, in pack and case quantities, so a job can be ordered exactly as it was measured. Shipping is free on all orders with no minimum, and every order ships the same day.

Socket wire

C9 socket wire is flat two-conductor wire with sockets molded in at a fixed spacing. It's sold on 1,000 ft. spools at 12 in. or 24 in. spacing, and as a 12/15 in. SPT-2 spool for heavier commercial runs. Runs are cut to length on site, so one spool covers many edges of different lengths. Magnetic socket spools are available for metal roofs and awnings, and replacement sockets let a single damaged socket be swapped without replacing the run.

LED C9 bulbs

LED C9 bulbs screw into the E17 intermediate base used on every C9 socket. They're sold in 25-packs for small jobs and re-lamps, and in 500-count cases for full rooflines. One bulb per socket: at 12 in. spacing that's one per foot of wire, at 15 in. about 0.8 per foot, and at 24 in. one every two feet. Choose one color temperature per building so every run matches.

Mounting

The clip depends on the surface, not the light. All-in-one clips fit shingles and gutters. C9 O-clips hold the socket and slide onto gutter lips. Ridge clips run along peaks. Tile and extended fascia clips cover tile roofs and deep fascia boards. Magnet clips hold to metal, and shingle tabs give a flat attachment under shingle edges. 8 in. light stakes set C9 bulbs along walkways and beds. Plan one clip per socket and a small spare count for breakage.

Power

Every run needs a male plug at the power end. Runs that continue to another run take a female plug at the far end. Slide-on plugs close onto cut socket wire or lamp cord without tools. Lamp cord extends power from an outlet to the first socket when the run starts away from the outlet. A photocell timer switches each circuit on at dusk and off after a set number of hours.

Kits or loose materials

C9 installation kits bundle socket wire, bulbs, plugs and clips sized to 250, 500, 1,000, 2,000 or 4,000 ft. at 12 in. or 15 in. spacing. They suit a single building measured to a known total. Loose materials suit crews cutting many runs from one spool across several jobs, or jobs that mix surfaces and need more than one clip type. The pricing table compares a 1,000 ft. run built from bulk parts with the 1,000 ft. kit.

Ordering and returns

Pricing is listed on every product page and applies to every buyer, with no application or login. There are no processing fees. Unused, uninstalled materials in original packaging can be returned within 30 days of delivery. Orders ship within the United States.

From site walk to materials list

A materials list for a C9 job is built from one walk around the building with a tape measure and a notepad. The goal is a list where every line traces back to a measurement, so nothing is guessed on install day and nothing is left on the truck that should have been on the roof.

1. Record each run, not just the total

Measure every lit edge separately: each gutter line, each rake, each ridge, each porch or garage edge. Write down where each run starts and which outlet will power it. The total footage sets the wire, bulb and clip counts. The number of runs sets the plug count. The run start points set how much lead and lamp cord the job needs.

2. Note the surface under every run

Clips are chosen by surface: O-clips or all-in-one clips on gutters, all-in-one clips or shingle tabs on shingle edges, ridge clips on peaks, tile and fascia clips on tile roofs and deep fascia, magnet clips on metal. A house with a gutter front and shingle rakes needs two clip types, and the list should split the count by run.

3. Fix the spacing

Spacing converts feet to sockets. At 12 in. spacing, sockets equal feet. At 15 in., multiply feet by 0.8. At 24 in., by 0.5. Pick one spacing per elevation so the runs match from the street.

4. Add the per-run parts

Each run gets a male plug at its power end. A run that feeds another run gets a female plug at its far end. Add about 3 ft. of wire per run for the lead to the outlet. Runs that start away from an outlet get a length of lamp cord and a plug pair.

5. Add circuits and timers

Group runs by the outlet that powers them. Every outdoor outlet should be GFCI-protected. One photocell timer per circuit switches the display on at dusk.

A worked materials list

A sample single-story job: front gutter line 64 ft., garage gutter line 28 ft., front gable rakes (2) 46 ft., porch roof edge 22 ft., for 160 ft. of roofline at 12 in. spacing on gutters, plus a 40 ft. walkway lit on stakes at 24 in. spacing. Case-quantity unit prices from the current catalog:

MaterialQuantityMaterials cost
Socket wire, 12 in. spacing (roofline)172 ft.$47.30
Socket wire, 24 in. spacing (walkway)43 ft.cut from spool
LED C9 bulbs180$114.84
C9 O-clips168$38.30
8 in. light stakes20$16
Male plugs5$3.49
Photocell timer1$11

Clips include 5% over the socket count for breakage and corners. The male plug count covers the four roof runs and the walkway run; because each run here starts at its own power point, no female plugs are needed. Costs are the per-unit share of case pricing, which is how materials are costed across several jobs cut from the same spool and cases; a crew buying for this job alone would order a 25-pack or a 500-count case of bulbs.

Where materials lists go wrong

  • Total-only measurements. A total without the individual runs can't produce a plug count.
  • One clip type for a mixed roof. Gutter clips won't hold on a rake edge.
  • No spare plugs. Every mis-cut uses a plug pair. Carry extra.
  • Mixed color temperatures. Warm white and sun warm white side by side read as two different products from the street. Put one color temperature on the list for the whole building.

Loose materials or a kit

When the job is one building at one spacing, a C9 installation kit sized at or just above the total footage covers wire, bulbs, plugs and clips in one line. For a 1,000 ft. run at 12 in. spacing, the parts list from spool and cases comes to $1,216.98 ($1.22 per foot), against $1,605.10 for the matching kit. Loose materials fit jobs with several clip types, several spacings, or several jobs cut from one spool.

Questions

How do I turn a roofline measurement into a materials list?

Total the footage of each run separately. Socket wire is the total plus a short lead per run. Bulbs and clips are one per socket (footage times 12 divided by the spacing in inches). Plugs are one male per run plus one female for every run that continues to another. Add one photocell timer per circuit.

Do I need SPT-1 or SPT-2 socket wire?

SPT-1 is the lighter jacket used on most residential rooflines. SPT-2 has a thicker jacket that holds up better to handling, longer runs and repeated seasons, and is common on commercial jobs. Match the plug to the wire gauge: SPT-2 zip plugs are made for SPT-2 wire.

What extra materials should I order beyond the count?

A few percent extra on clips for breakage and corners, a handful of spare bulbs per color for re-lamps, and spare male and female plugs for re-cuts. Plugs and clips are the parts most often short on site.

When do I need lamp cord?

When the first socket is farther from the outlet than the socket wire's lead allows, or when power has to cross a gap with no lights, such as a walkway or a section of wall. Cut lamp cord to length and finish it with slide-on plugs.

Can I mix kit materials with loose materials?

Yes. Kit socket wire, bulbs, plugs and clips are the same standard C9 parts sold separately, so a kit can be extended with a spool, a bulb pack and extra clips for an odd edge.

How much does shipping cost?

Shipping is free on all orders to the contiguous United States, with no order minimum.

How many bulbs do I need for a roofline?

Convert the run length to inches and divide by the socket spacing. A 100 ft. roofline is 1,200 in.; at 12 in. spacing that's 100 sockets and 100 bulbs, and at 15 in. spacing it's 80.

What's in a C9 installation kit?

Kits combine C9 socket wire at the listed length and spacing with LED C9 bulbs to fill the sockets, slide-on plugs to finish the runs and clips to mount them. The options list on each kit shows the bulb colors and clip mix available.

Which clip do I need?

All-in-one clips fit shingles and gutters. Ridge clips mount along roof peaks. Tile and extended fascia clips are for tile roofs and deep fascia boards. Magnet clips hold to metal surfaces, and light stakes place C9 or C7 bulbs along walkways and beds.

What's the difference between C9 and C7 bulbs?

C9 bulbs are the larger of the two, about 1⅛ in. across on an E17 intermediate base, and are the standard for rooflines and commercial displays viewed from the street. C7 bulbs are smaller, on an E12 candelabra base, and suit close-viewed spaces like porches, railings and walkways.

Can I return items I don't use?

Yes. Unused, uninstalled product in its original, intact packaging can be returned within 30 days of delivery. Request the return before shipping anything back.
